Appendicitis
What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the intestine on the lower right side. This organ’s actual function isn’t clear. It is believed that the appendix may help our body recover from infections and inflammations of the intestine like diarrhea, but the body can function just as well without its help. This is why it is removed when it gets inflamed. The procedure to remove the appendix is called appen dectomy. Appendectomy or appendicitis surgery is a common emergency procedure that our experts at Houston are well-versed with.
What are the symptoms of appendicitis?
- Sudden stomach pain from the belly button to the lower right abdomen
- nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- low-grade fever
- abdominal swelling
- rigid abdominal muscles
- constipation or diarrhea
If you notice you or a person you are around are beginning to complain about appendicitis symptoms, visit a surgical clinic or hospital immediately. It is possible that, if it is in fact due to an inflamed appendix, the organ may burst which could be fatal.
How is appendicitis treated?
The necessity for an appendectomy arises when the appendix is inflamed due to an infection. This infection, caused by clogged bacteria and/or stool in the opening of the appendix, causes the small organ to swell up. If it isn’t treated immediately, your appendix could keep swelling up, leading to it eventually bursting, spreading the infection to the rest of the abdomen. You may develop a case of peritonitis or an abscess in the abdomen. They both require immediate, emergency surgery.
