Care Close to Home
Why See a Hernia Surgeon in Katy?
Seeing a hernia surgeon in Katy keeps every clinic visit close to home. Hernia care usually involves several appointments: a consultation, sometimes imaging, a pre-operative visit, the operation and one or two follow-ups. For patients in Katy and western Fort Bend County, driving into central Houston for each of those visits adds time and stress. At our Katy office, all clinic visits happen in one place, with the same surgeon from the first visit to the last.
Many Katy patients are active adults, commuters and parents, and many work jobs that involve lifting. A hernia often shows up as pain during a workout, a bulge noticed after a long day on a job site, or discomfort that makes it hard to keep up with children. Dr. Shakir plans each repair with your work and activities in mind, including a realistic timeline for returning to lifting and exercise.
Who We See at the Katy Office

- Women with groin pain, including after pregnancy
- Patients who want a second opinion before surgery

Conditions Treated
Which Hernias Are Treated at the Katy Office?
Dr. Shakir evaluates and repairs all common adult hernias at the Katy office. Each type has its own page with symptoms, repair options and recovery details. The summaries below are short so you can find the right page quickly.
Inguinal (Groin) Hernia
The most common hernia in adults. It often feels like a bulge or ache in the groin that gets worse with standing, lifting or coughing. Hernias in both groins can often be repaired in one operation. Learn about inguinal hernia repair.
Umbilical Hernia
A bulge at or near the belly button, common after pregnancy or weight change. Small ones may be watched or closed with stitches; larger ones are usually reinforced with mesh. Learn about umbilical hernia repair.
Ventral and Incisional Hernia
A bulge in the front of the abdominal wall or along an old surgical scar. These hernias tend to grow over time, and CT imaging often helps plan the repair. Learn about ventral and incisional hernia repair.
Recurrent Hernia
A hernia that has come back after a previous repair. Dr. Shakir reviews your earlier operative report and imaging before planning a new repair. Learn about recurrent hernia repair.
Other groin hernias, such as femoral hernias, are also evaluated. Robotic repair is available for many hernia types; see robotic hernia repair and robotic ventral hernia repair. For a full overview of every hernia type, visit our main hernia repair page.
Where to Go
When to See a Hernia Surgeon and When to Go to the ER
Most hernias are not emergencies, and the right first step is an office consultation. A hernia that comes and goes, causes mild aching or bothers you mainly with activity can be evaluated at the Katy office. Call 713-955-9191 to schedule if you notice:
- A bulge in the groin, at the belly button or near a scar, with or without pain
- A bulge that pushes out when you stand, cough or strain and goes back when you lie down
- Groin pain or heaviness after lifting, exercise or a long day on your feet
- A hernia that is slowly getting larger or more uncomfortable
- A bulge or pain after a previous hernia repair
- A hernia found by your doctor or on a scan done for another reason
If the bulge is more painful than usual or harder to push back in, but you have none of the warning signs below, tell our staff when you call. Not sure whether your symptoms are a hernia? Read should I see a surgeon for hernia pain? and when to worry about hernia pain.
Go to the Emergency Room for These Signs
A trapped or strangulated hernia is an emergency. Seek care right away if a bulge turns firm, tender or discolored or won’t go back in, or comes with severe pain, vomiting, a swollen belly or fever. The Katy office is not an emergency room. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Timing of Repair
Does Every Hernia Need Surgery?
Not always right away, but surgery is the only treatment that repairs a hernia. Adult hernias do not heal on their own, and most people with a groin hernia eventually need repair. Some men with a small groin hernia that causes few or no symptoms can safely wait, with regular check-ups and a clear plan for what to watch for.
Repair is usually recommended when a hernia is painful, growing, hard to push back in or limiting your work or activities. Groin hernias in women are also usually repaired. A hernia belt or truss may ease symptoms for some people but does not fix the weak spot. Dr. Shakir explains whether waiting is reasonable for you, and you can read more in do hernias go away on their own? and when is hernia surgery necessary?

What to Expect
What Happens at a Hernia Consultation in Katy?
A first visit usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients leave with a diagnosis, a recommendation and a clear idea of what comes next.
What to Bring
- Photo ID and your insurance card
- Your referral, if your plan requires one
- A list of your medicines, supplements and allergies
- Any imaging reports and discs, such as ultrasound or CT
- Operative reports from any previous hernia repair
- Your questions, written down
Wear clothing that allows an easy examination of the abdomen and groin. New patient paperwork is on our patient forms page, and our list of questions to ask your hernia surgeon can help you prepare.
Second Opinions
If another surgeon has already recommended hernia surgery, you are welcome to schedule a second-opinion visit. Bring any imaging and visit notes you have so Dr. Shakir can review them.
1. History and Examination
Dr. Shakir asks about your symptoms, health, medicines and any previous operations. He examines the area while you stand and lie down, and while you cough. For groin hernias, he checks both sides. Most hernias are diagnosed by examination alone.
2. Imaging If Needed
An ultrasound or CT scan may be ordered when the diagnosis is unclear, the hernia is large or recurrent, or the examination is difficult. Imaging is arranged locally, and results are reviewed with you at the Katy office.
3. Your Repair Plan
Dr. Shakir explains whether to repair now or watch, which approach he recommends (open, laparoscopic or robotic), and whether mesh will be used and why. Your job, activities and health are part of the decision.
4. Scheduling and Next Steps
If you decide on surgery, our staff helps schedule it at a nearby hospital or surgical center, reviews pre-operative instructions, checks your insurance benefits and books your follow-up visit at the Katy office.
Repair Options
Open, Laparoscopic and Robotic Hernia Repair for Katy Patients
Katy patients have access to all three repair techniques: open, laparoscopic and robotic. The recommendation depends on the type and size of the hernia, any previous surgery and your overall health, not on a preference for one method. Each technique is described in detail on our main hernia repair page.
About Mesh
Most adult hernia repairs use surgical mesh to reinforce the weak area and lower the chance of the hernia coming back. A repair with stitches alone can be reasonable for some small hernias. Dr. Shakir explains the type of mesh, where it is placed and the trade-offs, so the decision is shared.
Comparing approaches? Read laparoscopic versus open hernia repair and robotic versus open hernia repair.
| Feature | Open Repair | Laparoscopic Repair | Robotic Repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incisions | One incision over the hernia | Several small incisions | Minimally invasive approach |
| Tools | Direct repair, mesh when needed | Camera and narrow instruments | Instruments controlled from a console |
| Surgeon’s view | Direct view through the incision | Camera image | Magnified 3-D view |
| Often considered for | First-time one-sided groin or small umbilical hernia | Both groins, or recurrence after open repair | Ventral, incisional and more complex hernias |
Typical patterns only. Dr. Shakir recommends an approach after your exam.
Surgery and Recovery
Where Is Surgery Done, and What Is Recovery Like?
Your clinic visits are in Katy, and the operation is performed at a nearby hospital or surgical center. The facility is chosen based on the type of repair and your insurance. Nearly all hernia repairs are outpatient, so most patients go home a few hours after surgery. Large abdominal wall repairs may need a short hospital stay.
A Typical Recovery Timeline
- First few days: soreness that improves steadily; short walks are encouraged
- Desk work: often within about a week
- Physical work: usually two to four weeks for a routine repair, longer for large ventral or incisional hernias
- Heavy lifting: usually limited for about four to six weeks after most repairs
Your timeline depends on the hernia, the technique and your job. Dr. Shakir gives you a written plan and can provide a work note with restrictions. See our hernia recovery timeline, time off work after hernia surgery and returning to exercise.
Before and After Surgery
Your pre-operative visit and post-operative check are at the Katy office. Our pre-operative care and post-operative care guides explain how to prepare and what to watch for at home. Call the office if you have a fever, increasing redness or drainage from an incision, or pain your medicine does not control.
