Colon Cancer

Colorectal Cancer Specialists at Surgical Associates of Southern Texas

What is colorectal cancer?

Rectal cancer is a preventable disease. It develops from benign growths in the rectum called polyps, which can be removed with a routine colonoscopy. However, these are not always detected and removed in time which leads to tumor growth. Over 90% of cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in patients over the age of 50. Still, plenty of children are at risk for colorectal cancer, considering the risk factors that come with their family’s medical history among many more.

What are the risk factors of rectal cancer?

  • Family history of colorectal cancer
  • Personal history of inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Personal history of other cancers
  • Consistently unhealthy diet

It is important to keep not of these in daily life. If you or a loved one has a history of cancers or inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis, it is advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet to reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

What are the symptoms of rectal cancer?

  • Unusual bowel movements
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Narrow shaped stool
  • Blood in the stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • pelvic/lower abdominal pain

If you notice more than a few of these symptoms it is best to consult your GP as soon as it is possible. It is imperative to understand that hemorrhoids display similar symptoms to colorectal cancer symptoms.

How do they test for colorectal cancer?

  • Fecal occult blood test
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Virtual colonoscopy
  • DNA stool test

How Clients Review Our Service..

Dr. Shakir saved the life of my wife. She suffered a ruptured colon late on a Saturday night during the peak of the COVID-19. He operated on her late that same night. As I was not allowed into the hospital, I only received phone calls before and after the operation. He talked to me the next day and made it very clear to me that her recovery would be a day at a time concern and that she was very sick. I very much felt that she was in very capable and professional care. A few months later he was able to perform a reversal operation to make her whole again. We are very pleased with the outcome of this set of events and we are forever grateful for his skill as a surgeon and doctor.
