What Is A Reflux Surgery?
When the acids in the stomach constantly back up from into the esophagus it leads to gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. What Causes GERD
When food is consumed, it travels into the stomach to a tube from the mouth called the esophagus. The LES allows the food to pass through to the stomach and generally closes immediately after the food is swallowed to prevent the reflux of the stomach juices into the esophagus. When the LES does not function properly and allows the stomach juices to enter into the esophagus it causes GERD. The high acid content of this juice flows back and causes a burn in the esophagus causing an irritation and inflammation along the chest area causing heartburn eventually damaging the esophagus.
