Board Certification

Board Certified in General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology

Dr. Shakir holds two board certifications from the American Board of Surgery (ABS): General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology. Board certification shows that a surgeon has completed accredited training and passed the board’s examinations in that specialty.

How to Check a Surgeon's Certification

You can confirm any surgeon’s board certification yourself. The American Board of Surgery offers a free public lookup, and the American College of Surgeons recommends checking certification when you choose a surgeon. Both resources are listed in the references at the end of this page.

General Surgery

The ABS describes general surgeons as experts in diseases of the abdomen, digestive tract, endocrine system, breast, skin, and blood vessels. Common conditions include hernias, gallstones, appendicitis, and colon cancer. General surgery residency lasts at least five years.

Complex General Surgical Oncology

This certification recognizes expertise in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with cancer, including rare or complex cancers. Surgeons must first be certified in general surgery, complete an accredited surgical oncology fellowship, and pass two board examinations.

Surgical Approaches

Open, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery

Dr. Shakir performs open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery and recommends the approach that best fits your condition and health. Robotic surgery is not used automatically. Each technique has situations where it works best.

  • Open surgery uses one incision over the problem area. It is often the right choice for small first-time hernias, emergencies, and patients who cannot have general anesthesia.
  • Laparoscopic surgery uses a camera and long instruments through a few small incisions.
  • Robotic surgery is also done through small incisions. The surgeon controls every movement of the instruments from a console, with a magnified three-dimensional view.

Robotic Hernia Surgery Experience

Hernia repair is a core part of Dr. Shakir’s practice, and robotic repair is one of the approaches he uses most often. He bases each recommendation on the hernia type, size, and location, whether it is a first-time or recurrent hernia, any previous operations and mesh, your anatomy and overall health, and your work and activity demands.

Robotic Inguinal Hernia Repair

Groin hernias repaired through three or four small incisions, with mesh placed behind the abdominal wall. Robotic inguinal repair and recovery.

Robotic Bilateral Inguinal Repair

Hernias in both groins repaired in one operation through the same incisions, with a single anesthetic and a single recovery. Inguinal hernia repair.

Abdominal wall hernias with the defect sutured closed and mesh placed within the wall layers. Robotic ventral repair.

Hernias at previous surgical scars, including multiple defects along one incision. Ventral and incisional hernia repair.

Hernias that have returned after an earlier repair, approached from a plane the first operation did not use. Recurrent hernia repair.

Both remain essential. Open repair suits many small first-time hernias and emergencies; laparoscopic repair suits many groin and ventral hernias. All hernia repair services.

The same approach applies to gallbladder surgery and other operations. Read more about robotic hernia repair and robotic vs. laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.

Getting Care

When Should You See a General Surgeon?

You should see a general surgeon when a symptom, exam, or test points to a problem that surgery may help diagnose or treat. Many patients are referred by a primary care doctor, gastroenterologist, or oncologist. Common reasons include:

  • A bulge or aching in the groin, belly button, or near an old incision
  • Pain in the upper right belly after meals, or gallstones found on an ultrasound
  • A mass or abnormal finding on a CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, or mammogram
  • A biopsy that shows cancer
  • A colon polyp that could not be removed during colonoscopy
  • A lump in the breast, neck, or under the skin that is new or growing
  • Acid reflux that continues despite medication
  • Hemorrhoids that keep bleeding or causing pain
  • A wound that is not healing

Not every problem needs an operation. Part of a consultation is learning when watchful waiting, medication, or another specialist is the better next step. Read more about choosing the right general surgeon.

When to Get Emergency Care

Seek emergency care for sudden or severe belly pain, lower right belly pain with fever or vomiting, a firm or discolored hernia bulge, repeated vomiting with a swollen belly, vomiting blood, black stools, or yellow eyes with fever. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
