Reasons to Book
When Is It Time to See a General Surgeon?
It is time to see a general surgeon when an exam, a test or your own symptoms point to a problem an operation might fix. A surgeon also helps when another doctor wants a surgical opinion. According to the American Board of Surgery, the specialty centers on diseases of the abdomen and also covers the digestive tract, breast, skin and endocrine glands.
A Doctor or Test Pointed You Here
- Your primary care doctor felt a hernia during a checkup
- An ultrasound or CT scan showed gallstones or a hernia
- An emergency room asked you to follow up with a surgeon
- A gastroenterologist referred you after an endoscopy or colonoscopy
- A mammogram, scan or biopsy found a mass or cancer
Symptoms That Keep Returning
- A bulge in the groin, near the belly button or along an old scar
- Pain or pressure when lifting, coughing or straining
- Upper right belly pain after eating, sometimes spreading to the back or right shoulder
- Heartburn or regurgitation that medicine does not control
- Rectal bleeding, itching or a tender lump near the anus
- A skin lump that grows, hurts or keeps getting infected
- A wound or incision that has not healed after several weeks
Know Where to Go
Office Appointment or Emergency Room: How Do You Decide?
Book an office visit for a problem that has built up over days, weeks or months and is not getting quickly worse. Go to an emergency room for sudden, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms. A hernia that aches after work, gallstones found on an ultrasound or a slow-growing lump can wait for a scheduled visit; call 713-955-9191.
Our Sugar Land and Katy offices are surgical clinics, not emergency facilities. If an emergency room treats you and recommends a surgeon, call us after you go home and bring your discharge papers and imaging reports. See what to do after the ER finds gallstones.
Call 911 or Go to the Nearest ER If You Have
Do not wait for an office visit if you have worsening belly pain, a hernia bulge that turns firm or dark and will not go back in, pain settling in the lower right side, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or chest pain. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Surgery or Not
Does Every Surgical Problem Need an Operation?
No. A consultation is an evaluation, not a commitment to surgery. Dr. Shakir advises an operation when he expects its benefit to outweigh its risk for you, and he says so when watching or other treatment is the better choice.
- Hernias: an adult hernia does not close on its own, but a small one with mild symptoms may be watched.
- Gallstones: stones that cause no symptoms often need no treatment; stones that cause attacks or inflammation usually do.
- Reflux: most people do well with medicine and daily changes, and surgery is considered when they do not.
- Hemorrhoids: many flare-ups settle with fiber, fluids and home care.
- Skin lumps: many are harmless; lumps that change or look uncertain are removed or biopsied.
- Cancer: the timing of an operation is set with your oncologists, and some patients start with chemotherapy or radiation.
A Scan Found Something Unexpected
Hernias and gallstones often turn up on scans done for another reason. Bring the report, and the images if you have them. Dr. Shakir weighs the finding against your symptoms before recommending anything. See a CT scan showed a hernia and do gallstones always need surgery?

What to Expect
What Happens at Your First Visit?

What to Bring
- Photo ID and your insurance card
- A referral, if your plan requires one
- Imaging reports, and discs if you have them
- Emergency room discharge papers from a recent visit

- A current medicine list, including blood thinners

- Which approach do you recommend, and why?
- When can I drive, work and lift again?
- Which symptoms after surgery mean I should call?
More ideas: questions to ask your hernia surgeon.
Listening and Examining
Dr. Shakir asks about your symptoms, earlier operations, health conditions and medicines, then examines the area of concern.
Reviewing Your Results
He goes over the scans, blood work, endoscopy or biopsy reports you bring, and orders new tests only when they would change the plan.
Explaining Your Options
You learn whether surgery is advised now, later or not at all, which approach fits, and what recovery may involve.
How Surgery Is Done
How Is the Surgical Approach Chosen?
The approach is chosen for your condition, anatomy, past surgery and overall health. Dr. Shakir performs open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, so the advice you get is not tied to one method.
Is Robotic Surgery Always Better?
No. Robotic and laparoscopic surgery share most of the same benefits over open surgery, such as smaller incisions. The goal is the safest effective operation for you. Compare options in robotic vs open hernia repair and robotic vs laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.
Switching to Open During Surgery
A minimally invasive operation sometimes has to become an open one because of scar tissue, inflammation, bleeding or unclear anatomy. That change is made for safety, and Dr. Shakir discusses it with you beforehand.
| Feature | Open | Laparoscopic | Robotic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incisions | One incision over the problem | Several small incisions | Minimally invasive method |
| Instruments | Through the incision | Camera and narrow instruments | Wristed instruments, magnified 3-D view |
| Common uses | Small hernias, emergencies, cancer, wall repairs | Gallbladder, groin hernias, appendix, reflux | Ventral, incisional and recurrent hernias |
| Recovery | Usually takes longer | Same day for many planned operations | Same day for many planned operations |
Typical patterns only. Dr. Shakir recommends an approach after your exam.
After You Decide
What Happens Before and After Surgery?
Once you decide on surgery, our team guides you from preparation through recovery. Where the operation takes place depends on the procedure and your insurance plan, and our staff tells you the location and how to prepare. Office visits before and after surgery take place in Sugar Land or Katy.
Recovery Basics
After many laparoscopic and robotic operations, people return to light activity within days; open and larger operations take longer. Call the office for a fever, spreading redness, incision drainage, or pain your medicine does not control.
Before Surgery
Dr. Shakir explains the procedure and expected recovery in detail. You receive instructions on eating, medicines and arrival time. See pre-operative care.
Surgery Day
Some small skin procedures can be done in the office with local anesthesia. Many planned gallbladder removals and hernia repairs allow you to go home the same day. Cancer, complex hernia and urgent operations may need a hospital stay.
Follow-Up
Follow-up visits check your healing and answer new questions. Read about post-operative care and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions From Rosenberg Patients

No. Rosenberg patients see Dr. Murtaza Shakir at the Sugar Land office (17510 W Grand Pkwy S, Suite 320, Sugar Land, TX 77479) or the Katy office (410 W Grand Pkwy S, Suite 4D, Katy, TX 77494).
Will my insurance require a referral?
That depends on your insurance. Some plans, often HMO plans, need a referral from your primary care doctor first. Our staff can help you check before your visit.
Which insurance plans do you accept?
The practice accepts most major plans, including participating Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare plans. Participation varies by plan, so verify your benefits. See our insurance page.
Does Dr. Shakir operate on cancer?
Yes. He is board certified in Complex General Surgical Oncology and treats breast, colon and rectal, liver, pancreatic, and thyroid and parathyroid cancers. He plans surgery with your other cancer doctors. See surgical oncology.
I think I have a hernia. Where should I start?
Start with a consultation, and bring any scan reports. Read about hernia repair and hernia care at our Sugar Land office. A hernia that turns hard, painful or discolored needs an emergency room.
My ultrasound showed gallstones. Do I need surgery?
Not always. Gallstones that cause no symptoms often need no treatment, while stones that cause attacks or inflammation usually do. See gallbladder care at our Sugar Land office.
What should I do if I think I have appendicitis?
Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911; do not wait for an office visit. Dr. Shakir can see you for follow-up after emergency care.
If I see a surgeon, will I have to have an operation?
No. Many problems are first treated with medicine, lifestyle changes or monitoring. Dr. Shakir recommends surgery only when he expects the benefit to outweigh the risk for you.
Is robotic surgery better than laparoscopic surgery?
Not automatically. Both use small incisions and share most of the same benefits. Dr. Shakir performs open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery and chooses the approach that fits your condition.
I have a lump under my skin. Will it need an operating room?
Often not. Many small skin lesions and cysts are removed in the office under local anesthesia, while larger or deeper ones may need a procedure outside the office. Learn more about skin lesion and cyst removal.
